Set Design Projects

Mamma Mia

The full, student built set of Mamma Mia featured a dock, a mountainside, a two story taverna, and turntable mounted building that rotated into a bedroom. I worked on the mountain, the dock, and dressing the set with the greenery.

Romeo & Juliet

This set was part of our entry into the 2023 North Carolina Theater Conference High School Play Festival. The entire set had to fit within a 10’x10′ space and be assembled in minutes. It featured fully rotating pieces that could be used on all sides and a trap door.

I was on run crew and led a paint team to finish these designs in time for performance, I painted the colorful side of the brain and the sunflowers. We were given the “Excellence In Design And Production Award: Best Run Crew” at the state competition.

Gypsy

The set for Gypsy rotated 360 degrees, making every inch of it usable (see video). I was part of the team that gilded the proscenium portion.

The Lightning Thief

As a part of the Musical Theater Competitions of America, I created this set design concept for The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. I submitted a scale model, a design plan, sketches, and three faux finish samples.

To create a realistic look for the tree bark, I used carpet padding. I carved out channels to mimic pine bark, and painted it using different shades of brown and green to capture the shading you find on real trees.

For the Ionic style Greek columns, I glued small wood slats to the surface for the fillets, and used joint compound to create the curve of the flutes. I painted it using a faux marble technique.

For the bricks, I used a red/brown scumble technique. I splatter painted white and black to create texture, and did a black was over a few to create depth. I then painted the mortar and the shadows between the bricks.

Clue: On Stage!

The fully student built set for Clue: On Stage featured seven “rooms”, a hidden revolving door and a secret passageway. My main responsibility for this set was the set dressing, but I also created some specific projects for the library, the kitchen, and the conservatory.

For the hidden revolving door, I was in charge of creating the library. We were able to get used books donated and then cut them down to about 2 inches wide to reduce the weight on the wall.

For the kitchen, I worked on the refrigerator. We constructed it so that it had a false back so an actor could hide inside to wait for their cue.

The set dressing on the conservatory was one of my larger projects for this show. The middle shelf moved and revealed a secret passageway for the actors to use in the show.

My favorite feature of this set was the hidden revolving door we got to build for the library. It was utilized multiple times throughout the show and always got a big reaction from the audience.
